A Pawsitive Afternoon with Tim and Gwyll

There’s something truly special about the bond between humans and animals, and here at Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby, we get to experience that magic first-hand thanks to our visits from Tim and Gwyll, the golden retriever duo from Therapy Dogs Nationwide. Their recent visit was a heart-warming reminder of just how much joy and comfort a friendly four-legged companion can bring.

The moment Gwyll walks into the room his tail starts wagging. Residents light up with smiles, conversations flow more freely, and laughter fills the space. There’s something so simple about being in the presence of a dog who seems to understand, without words, how to make people feel relaxed.

These sessions are more than just a lovely way to pass the afternoon, they’re an important part of caring for older people with dignity and respect. Interaction with animals has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even help with memory recall. For many of our residents, Gwyll’s visits stir happy memories of beloved pets and the routines that came with them. It’s these small moments that make such a difference in enriching life in a residential setting.

Tim, Gwyll’s dedicated handler, always takes time to chat with residents, sharing stories about Gwyll’s training and adventures. His gentle, patient manner perfectly complements Gwyll’s warm personality, creating an atmosphere that feels truly homely and supportive. Together, they embody the values we hold dear—community-led care in Merseyside, connection, and compassion.

For residents who may find some days a little quieter or more reflective, these visits are an uplifting highlight. Stroking Gwyll’s soft golden fur or watching him make his friendly rounds is a comforting reminder that love and companionship come in all forms. It’s an example of day-to-day care with a personal touch, something we take pride in offering every day at Abbeyfield.

Beyond the emotional benefits, visits from therapy animals can also encourage independent living with a helping hand. Residents who might not feel inclined to join a group activity often find themselves coming along to see Gwyll, building confidence and social engagement in the process. These small steps towards connection are vital for maintaining wellbeing and happiness in later life.

We’re incredibly grateful to Therapy Dogs Nationwide for the work they do in bringing moments of peace and joy to people across the country. Their volunteers, like Tim, dedicate time and care to improving the quality of life for others, and their visits help us maintain a truly safe and social setting for ageing well.
