Knitting, Knattering and Meaningful Moments

There’s something wonderfully comforting about gerting with friends for some knitting with the low hum of conversation and the occasional burst of laughter. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Abbeyfield Lear House every Thursday morning. Our Knit and Natter group is a firm favourite here in West Kirby, and it’s not hard to see why.

It’s not just about the knitting (although there’s plenty of that, too). It’s the togetherness. The stories shared, the skills passed on, the cups of tea sipped between stitches. These sessions are a perfect example of what makes Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby such a warm, community-centric place to live.

We’ve been busily working on hand-knitted items for our Christmas shoebox appeal – yes, even in June! Hats, scarves and little extras are lovingly made by residents and volunteers alike. There’s been a lot of concentration over the past few sessions, but also plenty of giggles. Some expert tips have been traded across the armchairs, and even a few residents picking up the needles for the first time in years.

For many of our residents, this group taps into something deeper – the joy of doing something meaningful while chatting with friends. It’s a slice of calm, a chance to reminisce and a reminder that purpose doesn’t stop at any age. The lounge is always full during Knit and Natter mornings. It creates a special kind of buzz that only comes from shared activity and genuine connection.

At Abbeyfield Lear House, we believe in adaptable care that meets every individual where they are – whether that’s helping someone re-learn a long-lost hobby, or simply providing the space to enjoy the things they’ve always loved. That’s what residential care should look like – full of heart, warmth and joy.

Whether you’re looking for respite care, replacement care or a permanent move, you’ll find more than just round the clock care here. You’ll find friendship, you’ll find laughter, you’ll find comfort.
