Stepping Back in Time with House of Memories

At Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby, we are always looking for new and meaningful ways to engage our residents. We were delighted to welcome the incredible House of Memories On the Road experience for a truly unforgettable day.

In the Lear House car park, what looked like an ordinary van quickly transformed into a fully interactive activity space. It expanded into a unique and immersive environment designed to spark memories and conversation. As part of our commitment to life-enriching activities for older adults, this experience brought something completely different to our usual programme.

Throughout the day, residents took part in four engaging sessions. We were lucky that family members, friends and staff were able join in and share the experience. This sense of togetherness is central to our ethos of community-led care in Merseyside. We believe meaningful connections are just as important as day-to-day support.

The first part of each session invited residents to explore a series of interactive environments. By simply touching the walls, different images and memory prompts were revealed. This encouraged residents to be curious, engaging in conversation and reflection. It was wonderful to see residents engaging with the displays, sharing stories and recognising familiar scenes.

This was followed by a series of nostalgic films featuring Liverpool and New Brighton from years gone by, which sparked even more conversation and reminiscence. These moments are incredibly valuable, supporting emotional wellbeing and reinforcing identity, all key elements of caring for older people with dignity and respect.

The entire experience created a safe and social setting for ageing well. Residents could explore, reminisce and connect with others in a relaxed and supportive environment. It is these kinds of thoughtful, interactive sessions that truly enhance supportive senior living in Wirral, offering both stimulation and enjoyment in equal measure.

For families exploring local care options for families in Wirral, experiences like this provide real peace of mind for families and loved ones. It’s special knowing that residents are not only cared for, but are also actively engaged in meaningful, memory-rich activities within a homely environment for later life.

It truly was an amazing day, full of discovery, conversation and shared memories. A huge thank you to House of Memories for bringing such a unique and impactful experience to Lear House. We hope to welcome you back again in the future.
