Another wonderful afternoon of poetry, reflection and conversation unfolded at Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby during our latest Shared Reading session with Anne, a volunteer from The Reader charity.
These monthly sessions are a real highlight for many of our residents – a chance to slow down, listen deeply and share stories sparked by the written word. This time, Anne brought along a beautiful selection of poems that sparked some rich discussion. From favourite childhood verses to thoughtful reflections on nature, love and life, every reading opened up a new memory, a new perspective, or just a lovely moment of connection.

As always, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Residents joined in at their own pace – some reading aloud, others simply listening and sharing their thoughts. There were nods of recognition and chuckles at a witty line.
These sessions are about more than just literature. They offer a gentle and inclusive way to get to know one another better – to remember, to reflect and to connect. They are so valuable in a homely environment for later life like ours.
Who are The Reader?
The Reader is a national charity based in Liverpool that uses the power of Shared Reading to transform lives. They bring people together through great literature to help improve mental wellbeing, build social connection and reduce isolation. Whether it’s in care homes, libraries, community centres or hospitals, their trained volunteers and staff create safe, welcoming spaces for people of all ages to engage with stories and poetry.
Their approach is simple but powerful: read aloud together, talk about what it means to you, and let the conversation go wherever it needs to. And as our residents will tell you – it really works.
