There’s just something about a wagging tail and a furry face that can brighten even the greyest day. And here at Abbeyfield Lear House, the sunshine arrived early this month in the form of our very special visitors – Gwyl and Tim from Therapy Dogs Nationwide.
We always say it, but it’s worth repeating – everyone looks forward to their visits.

From the moment Gwyl trots through the front door (with Tim not far behind), the atmosphere lifts. Residents beam; staff stop for a quick cuddle and conversations flow. Whether you’re a lifelong dog lover or just someone who enjoys a bit of company, Gwyl seems to have a sixth sense for where he’s needed most. He’ll sit quietly for a gentle stroke, lean in for a proper cuddle, or just potter about the lounge spreading his own brand of canine calm.
Visits like these are a perfect example of community-centric living in action. It’s more than just a treat, it’s meaningful, mindful connection. And that’s what life at Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby is all about. Our approach to adaptable care means recognising that well-being is about more than medicine, it’s about moments of joy, of calm, of companionship. Whether that comes from a chat, a song, or a very good boy named Gwyl.

Residential care at Lear House is designed to support the whole person, and yes, that includes the occasional slobbery kiss or two! These visits form part of the wider programme of highest quality care that includes not just the essentials, but the extras that make life rich and rewarding.
And let’s be honest – nothing lifts the mood quite like Gwyl deciding to have a lie-down right in the middle of the corridor and refusing to budge until he’s had his fill of attention.
Tim, of course, is always a hit too – it’s his thoughtful words, warmth and willingness to chat that make the visits so special. As a proud volunteer with Therapy Dogs Nationwide, his commitment helps to turn these simple sessions into something powerful. The benefits of animal-assisted therapy are well documented – reduced stress, lower blood pressure, improved mood – but we just know it makes us feel better. That’s enough for us.

So, to Gwyl and Tim – thank you. Your visits are more than just a highlight. They’re a reminder of how the little things can make a big difference.
