It is often the simplest activities that bring the greatest joy at Abbeyfield Hoylake & West Kirby. Our much-loved Thursday morning Knit and Natter sessions are a perfect example of this.
As part of our regular programme of life-enriching activities for older adults, these sessions offer a relaxed and sociable way for residents to stay engaged, creative and connected. They are a cornerstone of our approach to community-led care in Merseyside. Where shared experiences help build a genuine sense of belonging.

Over the past few weeks, residents have been busy working together on a very special project. With Heather’s expert guidance, the group created a beautiful Happy Easter banner. It has since taken pride of place in the lounge. It is a wonderful display of teamwork, creativity and care, with every stitch contributing to something meaningful and shared.

The sessions themselves are about far more than knitting. Of course, there is plenty of crafting, but just as important is the “natter”. Conversations flow easily, laughter is shared and friendships are strengthened. It is this balance that reflects our commitment to day-to-day care with a personal touch. Emotional wellbeing is supported alongside physical comfort.
Activities like Knit and Natter also support independent living with a helping hand. We give residents the opportunity to continue hobbies they enjoy while being part of a supportive and inclusive environment. Whether someone is an experienced knitter or simply enjoys being part of the group, everyone is welcomed and encouraged to join in.

The atmosphere each Thursday morning is warm, friendly and full of life. It is a true reflection of the homely environment for later life that we are proud to offer. It is also a great example of a safe and social setting for ageing well, where residents can take part in meaningful activities that promote connection and purpose.
For families exploring local care options for families in Wirral, it is these regular, engaging moments that provide real reassurance and peace of mind for families and loved ones. Knowing that residents are actively involved in creative, social experiences makes all the difference.
Our Knit and Natter sessions continue to be a highlight of the week, bringing people together through creativity, conversation and shared achievement. We think the results speak for themselves, and we always enjoy the knitting, and of course, the nattering too.
