We were delighted to welcome the Heswall Home Guard to Lear House for an afternoon of local history, conversation and shared memories. It turned out to be one of those wonderful sessions where the room came alive with stories, and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to share it with us.
A Fascinating Talk on Wirral’s Home Guard
Our visitors took us back in time with a talk about the history of the Home Guard here on the Wirral. Formed in 1940 as a volunteer force to help defend Britain’s home soil during the Second World War, the Home Guard was made up of local people who gave their time, often alongside demanding day jobs, to protect their communities.
Hearing how that history played out in our own corner of the country made it all the more meaningful. Familiar places and local connections brought the story close to home, and there was a real sense of pride in learning about the part Wirral people played.
Sharing Stories and Memories Together
What made the afternoon so special was the conversation it sparked. Residents shared their own stories and memories, some from their own experiences and others passed down through family. Each recollection added something new, and it was lovely to see the talk turn into a genuine exchange between our visitors and our residents.
Moments like these remind us just how much history lives within our community at Lear House, and how valuable it is to have the time and space to share it.
Plenty to See and Talk About
Our visitors brought along lots of items for everyone to look at, and these proved a real talking point. Having something to see up close is a wonderful way to spark memories and conversation, and there was no shortage of questions, comments and chatter as people took a closer look.
An Afternoon Enjoyed by All
It was a warm, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, and it was clear from the smiles and conversation that it was enjoyed by all. Visits like this are an important part of life at Lear House, sitting alongside our music sessions, creative activities and community partnerships, such as our visit from The Owl Man and our Knit and Natter garland project.
